Air sampling is one of the ways a home can be tested for mold. Although other tests must be performed along with it such as visual inspection and surface sampling, air sampling is a good way to make sure that there isn’t a larger source of mold yet to be detected. What are some other reasons why air sampling is important?

Because we cannot see mold spores with the naked eye, an air sample is beneficial as it can be analyzed in a laboratory to determine the kind of mold spores that are present as well as the severity of the problem. Air samples will be taken in any parts of the home where mold is already visible, areas that have water damage or places where moisture is coming into the home. If the air smells musty which indicates mold may be developing, this is another place to take an air sample.

When gathering an air sample, it is best for all windows and doors to be shut and indoor-outdoor air exchangers to be switched off. The weather will also play a role when it comes to the accuracy of the data. Extremely high winds or severe thunderstorms can affect the results of the test. Air pressure can also change the level of mold spores in the air, altering the levels of them in the home.

An air sample will be taken both before and after mold remediation to compare results and make sure mold has been properly removed. So, although air sampling must be done in conjunction with other tests for mold, it is a good way to see how good the air quality is in your home.
